Mechanics' Savings and Loan Associations were a common fixture of antebellum Southern commercial life — mutual savings institutions serving tradesmen and small merchants who had little use for, or access to, formal banking. By 1862, the Confederate blockade had caused a catastrophic shortage of small-denomination coin throughout the South, and businesses, municipalities, and quasi-banking institutions flooded local circulation with fractional scrip to fill the gap. This note is one product of that scramble.
Savannah-printed fractional notes from 1862 survive in surprisingly varied states — the paper quality available to local printers that year was inconsistent, and many issues show significant foxing or brittleness along fold lines even in lightly circulated examples.
