Obverse description Plain typeset scrip note on aged paper, with the issuer's name 'MECHANICS' Savings & Loan Association' printed in bold letterpress across the upper portion, flanked on the left by a large '50' numeral and on the right by a second '50' in a different typographical style. Below, the date 'SAVANNAH, April 23, 1862' is set in italic type, followed by the full deposit certificate text in script and roman typefaces. The denomination 'FIFTY CENTS' appears in large display capitals across the centre, with manuscript serial number, two handwritten signatures, and a partially visible red overprint along the lower edge.

THIS CERTIFICATE sheweth that Wm. H. Davis has deposited
FIFTY CENTS
with this Association, bearing four per cent interest after thirty days' notice, payable to bearer on return of this Scrip, in current Bank bills.

Reverse description The reverse consists of the printed face of a reused host note — in this case, the back of an earlier bank bill, as was common practice for Civil War-era scrip issued on the reverse of obsolete banknotes from other institutions.
