Marcus Garvey was declared Jamaica's first National Hero in 1964, but his appearance on circulating coinage came decades later as part of a broader redenomination and redesign of the Jamaican cent series during the 1970s and 1980s. Born in St. Ann's Bay in 1887, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and pioneered the Pan-African movement from Harlem — a fact that made his American deportation in 1927 a politically charged episode the Jamaican government was keen to rehabilitate posthumously.
By 1987, the 50-cent piece had lost most of its practical purchasing power to inflation, limiting its active circulation life.
