| Beschrijving keerzijde | The large numeral '50' occupies the upper central field in bold relief, serving as the principal denomination indicator. Immediately above the numeral, the country name is inscribed in Sinhala script along the upper rim. Below the numeral, the denomination is expressed in three scripts: Sinhala (සත පනහ), Tamil (ஐம்பது சதம்), and Latin (FIFTY CENTS), arranged in descending horizontal lines. The date of issue appears at the base of the design. The entire reverse field is enclosed by a decorative inner border of scrolling floral motifs, itself surrounded by a square-link outer rim. |

The shift to nickel-plated steel for this denomination was driven by rising nickel prices in the mid-1990s, a cost-containment measure adopted by several South Asian central banks around the same period. The magnetic property is the functional tell — earlier issues of the same type are non-magnetic, making the two varieties straightforward to distinguish without reference materials.
