Obverse description The post-apartheid coat of arms of South Africa is rendered in high relief at centre, featuring a shield supported by two human figures with raised arms, wheat stalks below, and a secretary bird with outstretched wings surmounting the ensemble, above which a rising sun motif appears. The motto legend in the Khoisan !Xam language, '!KE E:/XARRA //KE', is inscribed on the scroll at the base of the arms. The engraver's initials 'ALS' appear in small characters to the lower left of the arms. The date '2004' is inscribed in the upper field above the coat of arms, and the country name 'SOUTH AFRICA' curves along the lower rim in bold Latin lettering.
