The Perth Mint has issued lunar series coinage since 1996, and the dragon year — recurring every twelve years — consistently produces the highest secondary-market premiums of the twelve-animal cycle. This 2024 issue is among the first Perth Mint releases to carry the sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, a distinction that became historically fixed upon her death in September 2022; no further portrait updates will follow.
