Australia's humpback whale population collapsed under twentieth-century commercial whaling before the species received federal protection in 1963 — one of the earliest such protections globally. Recovery has been slow but measurable, with east coast populations now estimated above 40,000. The pad-printing process used here applies colour directly to the coin's surface through a silicone transfer method, a technique the RAM has deployed increasingly since the 2010s to sidestep the cost and complexity of enamel inlay.
