Applied at the top of the field is the Danish royal counterstamp: a crowned royal cypher FRVII (for King Frederik VII of Denmark), punched onto the coin during the revalidation of U.S. silver coinage for circulation in the Danish West Indies. The counterstamp also bears the date 1849, the year of Frederik VII's accession. |
