The Royal Canadian Mint's licensing deal with DC Comics produced a series of lenticular issues in the early 2010s, of which this Superman piece was among the most commercially aggressive — timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the character's debut in Action Comics #1 (1938) and the theatrical release of Man of Steel. The lenticular layer, laminated over the coin blank, shifts between two image states depending on viewing angle, a technique borrowed from novelty printing rather than traditional die work.
Legal tender status is nominal. These were sold directly to collectors at a significant premium over face value and saw no circulation.
