Issued in the months following Diana's death in August 1997, this Cook Islands commemorative is one of hundreds of pieces rushed to market by smaller Commonwealth nations capitalizing on the immediate wave of public grief. Cook Islands had no meaningful connection to Diana's work or life; the issue is frankly a revenue piece, not a memorial one. The Royal Mint itself produced no commemorative coinage for Diana in 1997.
