Part of the RCM's fractional gold wildlife series launched in the early 2010s, this piece belongs to a run of 1/25 oz issues that deliberately targeted collectors priced out of full-ounce bullion. The peregrine falcon had been listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act following severe DDT-related population collapse in the mid-twentieth century — numbers were so depleted by the 1970s that captive breeding programs at Canadian universities became a primary recovery mechanism.
Mintage on these fractional issues was tightly capped, and secondary market premiums over spot have historically run steep relative to the gold content.
