Reverse description The reverse features a boldly rendered full-body depiction of a Peary Caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi), shown standing in three-quarter view facing left, set against a stylized tundra landscape with vertical line engraving suggesting an arctic sky. The animal's impressive multi-tined antlers extend prominently into the upper field. The legend CANADA arcs along the upper periphery, the date 2019 is positioned to the right field, the engraver's initials JK appear below the date, and the scientific name Rangifer tarandus pearyi is inscribed in italicised lettering along the lower periphery.

Additional information

The Peary caribou — the subspecies depicted on this coin — was listed as endangered under Canada's Species at Risk Act in 2011, its population having collapsed to fewer than 700 individuals across the High Arctic archipelago. The Royal Canadian Mint has periodically revisited the fifty-cent denomination for wildlife and commemorative issues partly because the coin sees almost no circulation, making it an effective vehicle for collector programs with minimal interference from actual monetary use.
