Issued the year Béliveau turned 74, this coin appeared well into his retirement — he had walked away from the Canadiens' front office in 1993 after decades first as a player, then as an executive. The Royal Canadian Mint's sports celebrity series of the mid-2000s produced several such issues, though Béliveau's remains among the more restrained choices: a man who won the Stanley Cup ten times as a player and twice more as an executive, and who twice declined offers of the Governor General's appointment.
