Tuvalu's wildlife-themed collector series has operated as a revenue mechanism since the 1970s, when the newly independent nation recognized that its tiny domestic economy — built on copra and remittances — could not sustain itself without external income. Coin and stamp sales to foreign collectors became a formal revenue stream almost immediately after independence from the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1978.
