Fiji's 1970 independence from Britain prompted a full decimal coinage redesign, but the transition wasn't immediate — the new national series took years to fully stabilize in both design and production contracts. By 1980, the Reserve Bank of Fiji was issuing coins through the Royal Mint, a relationship that continued well into the decade before regional minting arrangements shifted toward the Royal Australian Mint.
