| 背面描述 | A humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is depicted mid-breach, its massive body arching dramatically above the ocean surface, with water spray and waves rendered in fine detail around the flukes and waterline. Seabirds are visible in the background field, enhancing the naturalistic marine composition designed by Sheldon Beveridge. The scientific binomial Megaptera novaeangliae appears in italic lettering along the lower central field, with CANADA inscribed along the bottom arc and 50 CENTS and 1998 along the right arc. The engraver's initials PL appear at lower left, and a beaded border encircles the entire design. |

| 附加信息 |
The 1998 humpback whale fifty-cent piece was part of Canada's ongoing commemorative wildlife series, but this particular issue drew notable collector interest because humpback populations in Canadian Pacific waters had only recently begun recovering after commercial whaling operations — which Canada did not formally prohibit until the late 1960s — had driven them to near-collapse. The Royal Canadian Mint struck these in relatively modest quantities compared to circulation issues, pushing them almost entirely into collector hands from the outset.
KM#319 is catalogued as a proof-like issue, never intended for general circulation.
