The Golden Tulip series was issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession, with each denomination in the set featuring a different flower. The tulip itself carries specific Canadian resonance: the Netherlands gifted Canada tulip bulbs annually beginning after World War II as gratitude for Canadian forces liberating Dutch territory and for sheltering Princess Juliana in Ottawa during the occupation.
Mintage on these coloured collector issues was capped tightly, and the enamel application was done by hand at the Ottawa facility.
