| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a dramatic colorized depiction of the RMS Empress of Ireland navigating through dense fog on the St. Lawrence River, rendered in deep blue and grey tones evoking the ill-fated night of 29 May 1914. The ship is shown in full profile, its silhouette partially obscured by swirling mist, conveying the tragedy of the collision with the collier SS Storstad. The date range 1914-2014 commemorates the centenary of the sinking, which claimed over 1,000 lives and remains one of Canada's worst maritime disasters. The legend and denomination are inscribed along the lower portion of the reverse field. This is the first issue in the Royal Canadian Mint's series commemorating sunken Canadian ships. |
