The RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River on May 29, 1914, after a collision with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad in thick fog. Of the 1,477 people aboard, 1,012 died — a death toll exceeding the Titanic's passenger loss rate, though the disaster has remained comparatively obscure largely because it occurred just weeks before the outbreak of the First World War displaced it from public consciousness entirely.
This issue appeared in the centenary year of the sinking, one of several RCM numismatic releases marking the anniversary.
