Reverse description The reverse, engraved by Thomas Shingles, presents a fully colorized rendition of the Canadian Coat of Arms in rich detail. The quartered shield displays the historic emblems of England, France, Scotland, and Ireland, along with a sprig of three maple leaves, and is encircled by a ribbon bearing the motto of the Order of Canada: Desiderantes meliorem patriam. A dexter lion supporter carries the Union Jack and a sinister unicorn supporter bears a banner charged with three fleurs-de-lis, flanking the shield. Above the shield, a royal helmet surmounted by a crowned lion holding a maple leaf is itself topped by the Crown of St. Edward, symbolizing Canada's constitutional monarchy. At the base, a ribbon inscribed A MARI USQUE AD MARE rests above a floral compartment composed of the emblems of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland. The legend 20 16 CANADA 50 CENTS appears in the field.
