Possum Magic, written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Julie Vivas, was first published in 1983 and became the best-selling Australian children's picture book of all time, with sales exceeding four million copies domestically. The Royal Australian Mint has returned to this title repeatedly for collector issues, making it one of the most franchised literary properties in Australian commemorative coinage. Pad printing — a process that transfers ink from an etched plate via a silicone pad — allows color fidelity impossible through traditional enamel inlay, though the surface remains more vulnerable to handling damage than conventional proof fields.
