The Battle of Long Khanh — better known as the Battle of Coral-Balmoral — took place in May and June 1969 in Phước Tuy Province, and stands among the most intense sustained engagements Australian forces fought in Vietnam. Over 26 nights, Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral came under repeated ground assault by North Vietnamese Army regulars, resulting in 26 Australian dead and over 100 wounded. The 50-year commemorative program from the Royal Australian Mint has systematically worked through major Vietnam War engagements, this piece falling within a broader series addressing battles that received little public recognition for decades after the war.
