The RAAF acquired its Lancasters relatively late in the war — the first Australian-crewed aircraft arrived in Britain under Bomber Command's No. 460 Squadron, which flew more Lancaster sorties than any other RAAF unit and suffered catastrophic losses doing it. By the time the type was retired from Australian service in 1963, the Lancaster had outlasted nearly every other heavy bomber of its generation in operational use.

The pad-printing process used here applies colour directly onto the coin's surface rather than through enamel inlay, a technique the RAM adopted to reduce production costs on commemorative issues while maintaining fine chromatic detail.
