Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, May Gibbs's bush-fairy characters first published in 1918, are among the few genuinely indigenous Australian children's creations — indigenous in the cultural sense, born from Gibbs's fascination with banksia pods and eucalyptus nuts rather than transplanted European folklore. The pad-printing technique used here applies colour directly onto the struck silver surface, a process the Perth Mint adopted to sidestep the enamel-fill limitations that had long frustrated detailed polychrome work on small-diameter coins.
