Australia's 2008 Beijing Olympic issues were among the first coins produced by the Perth Mint using pad printing — a technique borrowed from industrial product decoration — to achieve color saturation impossible through conventional enameling on a non-circular flan. The stamp-shaped format was a deliberate nod to philatelic crossover collecting, targeting a demographic the Mint had identified as underleveraged in the bullion-adjacent commemorative market.
