The 1918 Australian sixpence it reproduces was struck during the darkest stretch of the First World War, the same year as the Spring Offensive and the influenza pandemic that followed. The original coin circulated widely across Australia and among troops overseas, giving surviving examples in any decent grade genuine rarity. This 1999 RAM issue reproduced it in fine silver as part of a series revisiting pre-decimal coinage that most Australians had last handled as children before 1966 decimalisation swept the old denominations from circulation.
