Issued as part of New Zealand's short-lived Lord of the Rings commemorative circulation series, this coin appeared during the global release window of Peter Jackson's film trilogy — a rare instance of a central bank authorizing pop-culture imagery on legal tender coinage intended for general circulation rather than collector sets. The Reserve Bank retired the entire pre-decimal-redesign 50-cent series the following year, making the 2003 run among the last of that physical format before New Zealand's 2004 coinage rationalization eliminated both the 50-cent piece's size and several denominations outright.
