Dame Edna Everage is, of course, a fictional character — the suburban Melbourne housewife-turned-global-celebrity created by comedian Barry Humphries. The Royal Australian Mint's decision to place her alongside actual historical figures in the "Legends of Australia" 50-cent series sparked genuine debate about whether a made-up person belonged on legal tender at all. Humphries himself found it amusing.
The pad-printing technique used for colorization was still relatively new to Australian coinage in 2006, applied directly to the struck aluminium bronze blank.
