Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation on 2 June 1953, this coin appeared during a period when the Royal Australian Mint was aggressively expanding its proof program for the collector market. The 4th portrait — Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy, adopted by Australia in 1999 — was still relatively new to circulation coinage at the time of striking.
The coronation itself had been the first major royal event broadcast live on BBC television, reaching an estimated 27 million viewers in Britain alone.
