The Battle of Amiens, launched on 8 August 1918, broke the German lines so decisively that Erich Ludendorff called it "the black day of the German Army." Australian Corps troops under General John Monash played a central role, advancing nearly eight miles on the first day — one of the most successful single-day attacks of the entire war. This coin was issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's Centenary of Anzac program, which ran commemoratives across multiple years to mark the hundredth anniversaries of key WWI engagements involving Australian forces.
Amiens effectively began the Hundred Days Offensive that ended the war ninety-four days later.
