The Malayan Emergency ran from 1948 to 1960, a communist insurgency fought largely in jungle terrain that demanded counterinsurgency tactics the Australian Army had never previously developed at scale. Around 7,000 Australians served across the conflict, and the methods refined there — particularly by the Royal Australian Regiment — directly shaped doctrine that was later deployed in Vietnam. Twelve Australians were killed in action.
