The Gulf Wars sub-series within the broader "Australians at War" program marks Australia's involvement in the 1991 Gulf War and subsequent 2003 Iraq War, both undertaken as part of coalition forces. Australia committed special forces and naval assets to the 1991 campaign and embedded troops with U.S. and British units during the 2003 invasion — the first time Australian soldiers had fought in the Middle East since World War I's Sinai and Palestine campaigns. The pad-printing technique applied to the copper-nickel flan allowed colour reproduction impossible through conventional striking.
