| Reverse description | The reverse depicts two warships in a divided composition separated by a horizontal band bearing the legend BATTLE OF COCOS ISLANDS 1914. In the upper half, HMAS Sydney is shown in full profile steaming to the right, her funnels billowing smoke, with the denomination numeral 50 positioned at the upper right of the field and a small map of the Cocos Islands at the left. In the lower half, the stricken SMS Emden is portrayed run aground and heavily damaged, her masts and superstructure collapsed and listing, set against a stylised wavy sea. The names HMAS SYDNEY and SMS EMDEN are inscribed respectively in the upper left and lower right of the field, commemorating Australia's first naval victory of World War I. |
