The Square Kookaburra series, issued annually by the Perth Mint from 1998, occupies an unusual position in Australian numismatics — struck as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act yet produced explicitly for the collector market, meaning virtually no examples ever entered circulation. The square format required custom planchet production and posed real technical challenges at the press, particularly in achieving even strike pressure across angular corners.
The 2002 issue falls in the middle of the series run, before mintage figures were formally capped. Perth Mint production records from this period are notoriously inconsistent in published form.
