Australia Day commemoratives from the Royal Australian Mint have been an annual fixture since the 1990s, but the 2010 issue arrived at a politically charged moment — debate over changing the date of the national holiday was gaining mainstream traction, and the mint's continued production of the series was itself read by some as an institutional position. The partial gold plating technique used here, applied selectively over .999 silver, was a production approach the RAM refined through the mid-2000s to distinguish premium issues without the cost of full gold overlay.
