Issued to mark the rebranding of AIATSIS — the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies — this coin appeared the same year the institute underwent a formal legislative refresh under the AIATSIS Act 2013, which restructured its governance and broadened its mandate for cultural preservation. The pad-printing technique applied to circulating fifty-cent pieces was relatively new to the RAM at this point, having been developed to bring colour to standard cupro-nickel blanks without a dedicated proof process.
KM#2159a distinguishes the colourised version from the plain strikes of the same type.
