Obverse description The fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley faces right, depicted with a jewelled coronet and a pearl drop earring, her hair elegantly coiffed. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery, with AUSTRALIA and the date 2013 continuing along the right, all in raised Latin capitals. The engraver's initials IRB appear in small characters beneath the truncation of the bust. The mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the finely detailed relief of the portrait, characteristic of the Royal Australian Mint's highest striking standard.

Additional information

Elizabeth II's coronation on 2 June 1953 was the first to be televised, drawing an estimated 27 million viewers in Britain alone at a time when most households had only just acquired a set. Australia marked the 60th anniversary with a run of silver proof issues from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, which by 2013 had fully displaced the Perth Mint as the primary producer of Australian commemorative coinage for general release. The fourth portrait — Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy, adopted across Commonwealth coinage from 1998 — appears here in its final years before Jody Clark's replacement was phased in from 2015.
