| 背面描述 | Two ballet dancers are depicted in a graceful performance pose at the centre of the dodecagonal field, rendered in fine relief. Sweeping across the entire field in an elegant large cursive script is the commemorative inscription '50 Years of the Australian Ballet', the flowing lettering serving as both legend and decorative element. The denomination numeral 50 appears in the lower right of the field in bold upright characters, providing a typographic contrast to the cursive surround. |

The Australian Ballet was founded in 1962 under the direction of Peggy van Praagh, recruited from London specifically to build a national company from near scratch. The 2012 anniversary fell during a period when the Royal Australian Mint was producing an unusually high volume of commemorative fifty-cent pieces — the dodecagonal format having become a reliable vehicle for cultural anniversaries since the decimal changeover in 1966.
