Australia's decimal system launched on 14 February 1966 — "Decimal Currency Day" — after a politically charged naming dispute in which the Holt government rejected the Reserve Bank's preferred term "royal" following sustained public ridicule. The original 50-cent piece issued that year was struck in 80% silver, but rising bullion prices forced its withdrawal after just two years, making the 1966 round 50-cent the shortest-lived denomination in Australian decimal history.
This gilt commemorative marks exactly five decades from that introduction.
