The 1994 New Zealand bimetallic gold proof program coincided with growing collector interest in two-tone precious metal issues — a format pioneered by the Royal Canadian Mint in the late 1980s and quickly adopted by Commonwealth mints chasing the high-end proof market. Combining .9167 fine gold in the centre with a .375 white gold outer ring was an unusual technical choice; most bimetallic proofs of this period used dissimilar base metals, making an all-gold bimetal a genuinely uncommon production decision.
Mintages for this issue were tightly restricted. KM#90b is catalogued separately from the standard and silver proof variants precisely because of the compositional distinction.
