Reverse description The Commonwealth of Australia Coat of Arms is centrally displayed, supported on the dexter side by a kangaroo and on the sinister side by an emu, both rendered in fine relief against a decorative background of native wattle foliage. The quartered shield depicts the badges of the six Australian states, surmounted by a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star. The large numeral 50 appears prominently in the lower field, with the engraver's initials SD (Stuart Devlin) visible at the base of the design.

Additional information

Australia's dodecagonal fifty-cent piece has the unusual distinction of being the largest-denomination coin in circulation that costs more in raw metal than its face value — a problem that emerged with the original 1966 silver fifty-cent and prompted the switch to copper-nickel within two years. The twelve-sided format, retained from that 1966 introduction, was chosen partly to assist vision-impaired users in distinguishing it from round coins.

The third portrait by Raphael Maklouf was adopted across Commonwealth coinage from 1985 following the standard rotation of effigies that occurs roughly every fifteen years.
