Australia's 1977 Silver Jubilee fifty-cent piece was issued to mark Elizabeth II's twenty-fifth year on the throne — a reign that had begun with her accession in February 1952 following the death of George VI. The Royal Australian Mint produced both a standard circulation strike and a proof version that year, though the circulating pieces moved through pockets and tills in sufficient numbers that worn examples are far easier to locate than sharp ones.
The coin's copper-nickel composition reflects the practical reality that had governed Australian fifty-cent pieces since 1969, after the original 80% silver dodecagonal pieces proved too expensive to keep in circulation and were rapidly hoarded.
