Issued to mark the July 1981 marriage of Charles and Diana, this piece was part of a wave of Commonwealth commemoratives that flooded the market simultaneously — the Royal Australian Mint among dozens of mints worldwide producing pieces for the same event. Australian circulation commemoratives of this type were sold directly to the public through the mint and through Australia Post, meaning most examples were immediately set aside rather than spent, which accounts for the overwhelming number of survivors in near-mint condition.
