New Zealand's decimal coinage launched on 10 July 1967, replacing the old pound system at a rate of two dollars to the pound. The 50-cent piece was the workhorse of the new series, and the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra handled significant portions of the striking alongside the Royal Mint. Planchet errors on this type typically involve undersized or misweight blanks sourced from defective strip — the copper-nickel alloy used through this period was prone to occasional thickness variation during rolling, allowing off-spec blanks to pass visual inspection and enter the press.
Confirmed error pieces from this issue are scarce in documentation. Any example should be weighed against the published specification before attribution.
