| 裏面の説明 | A naturalistic, high-relief depiction of an octopus occupies the central field, its eight tentacles with sucker detail radiating dynamically across the coin's surface. The country name TUVALU arcs along the upper legend in raised Latin lettering, while the denomination 50c appears to the right of the octopus body in the mid-field. The date is inscribed along the lower periphery. A beaded border surrounds the entire design. |

Tuvalu's coinage was established at independence in 1976, when the former Ellice Islands separated administratively from the Gilbert Islands and required its own monetary identity within the Australian dollar system. The Royal Australian Mint in Canberra produced the initial issue, making these among the earliest sovereign coinage of any Pacific microstate. The 50-cent piece was the largest denomination in the inaugural set.
The series ran nearly a decade before the effigy was updated to Raphael Maklouf's third portrait in 1985.
