The cultural practice of gifting coins for luck has deep roots in Chinese tradition, and the RCM recognized a commercially viable niche in producing legal-tender pieces calibrated to that custom.
Silver-plated copper was chosen deliberately to keep the retail price accessible without sacrificing the visual weight expected of a gift piece.
