Edward VII's Canadian coinage inherited its specifications directly from Victoria's final issues, but the accession created an immediate bureaucratic scramble — the Royal Mint in London struck the first Canadian coins bearing his portrait in 1902 before Ottawa's branch mint had the capacity to take over. The "Victorian Leaves" designation distinguishes this type from the later "Edwardian Leaves" reverse introduced in 1910, the distinction hinging on subtle differences in the maple leaf rendering that were debated at the time as a quiet nod to continuity with the previous reign.
The series ended with Edward's death in May 1910, making the final-year pieces a short-run issue struck under a king already gravely ill.
