Malta decimalized its currency in 1972, replacing the pound-shilling-pence system with the Maltese lira divided into 100 cents. The 50-cent piece occupied the heavy end of everyday circulation, and the copper-nickel composition chosen for the denomination proved durable enough that many pieces from the early series remained in active use well into the 1990s.
KM#62 belongs to the second-phase production run following the initial decimal rollout, minted at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales.
