Beaune issued local emergency coinage — called monnaie de nécessité — during periods when fractional coinage was in short supply, a practice with deep roots in French provincial commerce. This 1997 piece is a modern commemorative revival of that tradition rather than a genuine necessity coin, produced for the tourist trade and local collectors around the Burgundy wine capital.
