Obverse description The obverse features a central device depicting the portrait of Four Bears, a Mandan chief, wearing a feathered headdress, set against a radiating sunburst field. To the right is a scene of a covered wagon and sod house on the prairie, flanked by wheat stalks. The legend DAKOTA arcs across the top, with FOUR BEARS, the centennial dates 1861 - 1961, and TERRITORY CENTENNIAL inscribed in the lower field and along the bottom rim.

Reverse description The reverse is entirely text-based, with the circular legend DAKOTA TERRITORY CENTENNIAL at the top and NORTH DAKOTA SOUVENIR COIN along the bottom rim. The central field carries the denomination 50¢ IN TRADE 50¢ in large relief, above a multi-line inscription stating the token's redemption terms, valid at any cooperating business or redeemable at face value at the North Dakota Centennial Headquarters, Bismarck, until December 31, 1961.
